How to choose a photographer
A practical starting point for weddings, family portraits, graduation, business imagery and events.
Choose a photographer whose recent work matches the pictures you want, who offers the relevant service, and who can cover your location and date. Before you commit, agree the scope, total price, delivery arrangements and permitted image uses directly with them.
1. Start with the photographs you need
Explain what the images are for, who or what will be photographed, the location and any fixed timing. A headshot session, a wedding and a commercial campaign require different experience and preparation.

2. Look beyond a few favourite images
Review complete galleries or a relevant body of work on the photographer’s own website. Look at lighting, expressions, editing and consistency. Ask how they approach situations similar to yours: an indoor ceremony, a busy event, a shy child or a team working to a tight schedule.
3. Check the practical fit
- Can they cover your date and location, and are travel costs included?
- What planning, photography time and editing are included?
- How many finished images will you receive, in what format and when?
- What happens if plans change or the photographer cannot attend?
- For business use, does the agreed licence cover your intended channels and campaign?
4. Compare the whole proposal
Compare scope and deliverables alongside price. Ask for a written quote and booking terms, and clarify deposits, expenses, additional hours and any optional products before booking.
5. Send a useful first enquiry
Include the shoot type, town or venue, preferred date, approximate timings, intended image use and any budget range you are comfortable sharing. Add a short description of the style you like and ask for relevant examples.
